What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition that results from a malfunctioning lymphatic system, leading to poor drainage of lymph fluid. When the lymph flow is disrupted, proteins and fats build up in the tissues, causing swelling and long-term changes in the affected area. Over time, this can lead to thickening of the skin, fat accumulation, and tissue scarring (fibrosis).

Lymphedema can be primary, caused by genetic defects in the lymphatic system, or secondary, resulting from damage to the lymph vessels. Common causes of secondary lymphedema include infections, trauma, radiation therapy, or the surgical removal of lymph nodes during cancer treatment.

Message from our President

Dear Members and Friends,

It is an honour to step into the role of President of the Lymphedema Society of Singapore. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this passionate and purpose-driven community. Our shared mission is clear: to enhance lymphedema care in Singapore through evidence-based practices, strong patient advocacy, and widespread public education. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of those living with lymphedema.

Pushing Forward with Evidence-Based Care
At the heart of our mission is a commitment to evidence-based medicine. We aim to bring the latest research, clinical guidelines, and innovations into everyday care. Through partnerships with healthcare professionals, researchers, and institutions, we will champion advancements that lead to better outcomes for our patients.

Putting Patients First through Advocacy
Advocacy remains a cornerstone of our work. We will stand with patients to ensure their voices are heard and their needs met. By working closely with healthcare providers, policymakers, and support networks, we seek to improve access to care, enhance available resources, and empower patients to take charge of their health.

Raising Awareness through Education
Public understanding of lymphedema is vital. We are committed to driving educational campaigns that shed light on the condition—its causes, symptoms, and management. By spreading awareness, we aim to encourage early detection and reduce the stigma that often surrounds this condition.
As we look ahead, I warmly invite all of you—patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and advocates—to walk this path with us. Your involvement and support are what fuel our progress. Let’s build a stronger, more informed, and more compassionate community for everyone affected by lymphedema.

Thank you for your continued support and trust in our mission.

Warmest regards,

Dr Wong Wei Jiat Allen
